  • There are three main types of school boards in India: State board, Central board, and International board
  • State board: Typically states have their own schooling curriculumand they follow this pattern up to 12th Grade exam. Both private and government schools can offer this certification. The medium of education for these schools can be the state language, English or a mix of both
  • Central board: These certificate exams are offered by CBSE and ICSE boards in India. Primarily private schools offer these types of certifications. Some schools may have both the options available. The medium of education for these schools is English. This is a common pattern of schooling across India and allows flexibility while changing your place of residence in India
  • International board: International board certifications are available through private schools. These schools typically fall into "International School" category and are available primarily in the very major cities in India. The medium of education for these schools is English. This type of certification is preferred by parents who want the best in-class facilities for their kids while aiming for Bachelors education outside India. Also note that theannual fees for these types of schools can be 5 to 10x higher than a standard CBSE/ ICSE school.
  • Schooling cycle: Schools in India typically start the new academic year in the month of June to March/April of the following year.
  • One needs to holistically think before deciding on the type of the school for their kids. Considerations should include financial burden, future plans, stability/flexibility of location, child's inclination and the ability to cope with different types of education patterns.
  • Schooling advisors from Vroomble will help you gain further insights on the same.
  • Returning Indians must inform their bank's local branch office, if they currently hold NRO/NRE/ FCNR accounts while being abroad. These accounts need to be redesigned to local accounts such as savings and current accounts.
  • One cannot hold NRO/ NRE/ FCNR account once they are permanently settled in India (more than 6 months). Only fixed deposits in NRE/ FCNR accounts can be held up to maturity period. Further to that, deposits in NRO/ NRE/ FCNR accounts can be transferred to Resident Foreign Currency (RFC) account for a period of almost5 years.
  • One can still continue to hold movable and immovable assets as well as bank accounts and general insurance policies abroad.
  • Typically, we recommend to open one savings bank account (self/ joint) in a state run bank (e.g. State Bank of India) and a similar account with a private bank (e.g. HDFC, ICICI) to ensure that a diversity of options are available. Also, statements/passbooks of state run banks are more trusted as address proofs. Recently the proofs from private banks are also held valid in majority of the cases (including passport application/ renewal).

  • Depending on demand and locality, a physician visit can typically cost in a range of INR 150 – 500. These are typically out of pocket expenses & can be claimed against annual tax free medical reimbursement slab of INR 15,000.0
  • Treatment cost for hospital stay can vary a lot depending on the requirement of a patient. Typically room charges for overnight stay at a good hospital are INR 2000 – 5000 with varying types of rooms.
  • Hospital stays beyond a day can be claimed through medical insurance facility. Indian companies usually provide basic medical insurance.(~INR 2, 00,000 – INR 5, 00,000) for a family & can be used against hospitalization purpose. Separate/ additional medical insurance can also be purchased which allows tax exemption for premium up to a certain limit.

Otherwise, the charges can also be reimbursed through claim process but that may require more efforts & follow ups
